Spotlight: The power of aloe vera

There is hardly a more effective medicinal plant than aloe vera. The use of this powerful plant follows an ancient tradition and its history goes back a long way: Sumerian and Egyptian records show that aloe vera was already being used medicinally 5,000 years ago. The healing power of the plant is unique, which is why it is used to treat wounds, skin diseases, gastrointestinal complaints, joint pain, inflammation of the gums and sunburn, among other things.

In ancient Egypt, aloe vera was known as the plant of immortality and the blood of the gods. According to tradition, Nefertiti and Cleopatra used the soothing aloe vera gel for skin care.

The healing power of aloe vera was also utilised in ancient Greece. As the aloe vera gel can seal small cuts and wounds on its leaves and thus heal itself, it was soon also used for medicinal purposes. Its leaves can store considerable amounts of moisture and nutrients, allowing the plant to survive for long periods without water or soil. The gel-like structure of the plant optimises this storage capacity.

Today, Mexico is one of the most important main cultivation areas, with organic farmers refraining from using fertilisers and pesticides. The Maya were convinced that the healing properties of aloe vera were also due to the soul of the plant. This is why aloe vera is hung on the walls of houses to protect the inhabitants from illness.

The interplay between mono- and polysaccharides (single and multiple sugars), essential amino acids, minerals, trace elements and secondary plant substances means that the plant has an anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, antiviral and antioxidant effect and supports healing processes. Aloe vera alleviates skin reactions after chemotherapy, accelerates wound healing after an operation, heals burns and is more effective against sunburn than cortisone. The plant is also effective against skin irritation, couperose, neurodermatitis, rosacea and acne.

Many of our Biomazing products contain Aloe Vera. Santaverde relies entirely on the healing power and the Aloe Vera facial sponge from Dr Sponge cleanses the skin particularly thoroughly. Likewise Tata Harper Skincare relies on the effectiveness of the medicinal plant for its highly effective facial care products and the After Sun Gel from Farfalla soothes even skin irritated and reddened by the sun.
